Short answer: AI is changing which jobs are in demand far more than how many jobs exist. Barclays and Microsoft are trimming support roles and offering buyouts, while demand grows for AI, data, cybersecurity and care work. The calm move: map where demand is heading, test any opportunity on paper, and walk away from anyone promising fast riches after a layoff.

What happened at Barclays and Microsoft?

On 22 October 2026, Barclays said it would cut about 5,000 jobs, roughly 5% of its workforce, by the end of the year, including about 1,000 already cut earlier in 2026. About 60% of the reductions fall in support functions, including developers, and the bank expects restructuring costs of roughly £600 million this year. Chief executive C.S. Venkatakrishnan called AI "the icing on the cake, not the cake," while the union Unite accused the bank of using AI to justify cuts.

Days later, Microsoft offered a voluntary buyout to about 60,000 employees, close to a quarter of its workforce in the U.S., Canada, India and the U.K., with an early-December deadline. It helps contain costs while the company spends well over $150 billion a year on AI and data centers. We first spotted both stories in reels from Channel 4 News and ABC World News Tonight.

Is AI really behind the layoffs?

Partly. Challenger, Gray & Christmas counted 573,195 announced U.S. job cuts from January to September 2026, down 39% on the same period of 2025. Employers cited AI for 120,136 of those cuts, about 21%, making it the top stated reason this year, up from 54,836 AI-cited cuts in all of 2025. By September, though, AI was named for only 3,961 cuts, around 9%. These are employer-stated reasons, not proven cause, and "AI-washing" (blaming AI for ordinary cost cuts) is a fair criticism.

Stanford's Digital Economy Lab found that workers aged 22 to 25 in the most AI-exposed jobs saw a 13–16% relative drop in employment (the figure depends on the study version), while experienced workers held steady. Losses appeared where AI automates tasks, not where it augments people.

Where is job demand moving?

The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 expects 170 million jobs to be created and 92 million displaced by 2030, a net gain of 78 million. It also expects about 39% of workers' core skills to change, and 63% of employers say skills gaps are their biggest barrier. Fast-growing areas include:

  • AI and big-data specialists, plus people who use AI well in everyday roles.
  • Cybersecurity, as more money moves online.
  • Care and education, built on trust.
  • Delivery and farm work, which software cannot replace.

How do you evaluate an opportunity, or a buyout, calmly?

A layoff or buyout offer creates pressure to act fast. Slow down and run this checklist:

  • Write down the real numbers. Severance, healthcare, unvested pay and months of savings. Microsoft's reported formula of one week of pay per six months of service can look generous or thin depending on your runway.
  • Price the downside first. If a new path earned nothing for six months, could you cope? If not, shrink the bet.
  • Test on paper. Take a short course or freelance one project before spending savings.
  • Get qualified help. A tax professional, benefits advisor or employment lawyer knows your situation; an article does not.

What are the red flags of "get rich after a layoff" schemes?

Be wary of anyone who:

  • Promises guaranteed income or says you can "replace your salary in a month."
  • Asks you to pay up front for a course, a "trading signal" or a starter kit.
  • Pushes you to move severance or retirement money into something you cannot explain.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI causing most layoffs in 2026?

Not most. AI was the top reason U.S. employers gave for announced cuts in 2026, but still a minority of them, and total announced cuts fell compared with 2025. Those are stated reasons, not proven cause.

Which skills are rising as AI spreads?

The World Economic Forum points to AI and big-data skills, cybersecurity, care, education, and hands-on work such as delivery and farming.

Should I take a voluntary buyout?

Only you can decide. List the full package, your savings runway and healthcare, test your next step on paper, and talk to a qualified tax or benefits professional first.
